From the
data that has been collected it is evident that majority of the target group
thinks genetically modified organisms have negative affects on the health of
society. Since the target group was a
group of students, the parents are the ones who mostly shopped for groceries,
but most students say they would rather eat organic food and would even pay
more for it. Students say they had an
average or good knowledge on the topic of GMOs. Most people that were surveyed
are concerned about the effects that genetically modified organisms have on
human health, animal health and the health of the environment. The students disagree with the article that states
GMOs are just as safe or safer than conventional foods (Entine, 2013). The students have most likely been taught
that GMOs cause negative affects on health and are under the impression that
eating organic food is safer. Other
classes at Nelson
High School have
discussed the topic of GMOs and companies that produce them like Monsanto. These classes have likely stated that GMOs
are not good and should be avoided as shown with the study done on rats with GM
corn (Adams, 2013). Although the students do think that GMOs are
not good, they think it is acceptable to use them to feed developing
countries. Students know about world
hunger and are very generous to give to charities as shown with Nelson Charity
Month. The students have good knowledge
of hunger around the world and I believe this is why they agree with using GMOs
to help feed developing countries. They
would rather feed these countries with GMOs than to let them have less food by
not using GMOs. Overall, the students of
Nelson High School seem to be concerned with
GMOs and GMO food products. They believe
that GMOs cause negative affects on the health of society.
