You probably eat Genetically Modified Foods (GMO's) every day and don't even realize. What is a genetically modified organism? A GMO is an organism in which genes from another organism are inserted into the targeted organism’s DNA, usually to produce a "better" organism. 30 000 different GMO's exist on grocery store shelves (Chris, 2011). Most people don't think about the food they buy being modified from their natural state. The purpose of this website it to inform and discuss the topic of genetically modified food and compare the good and the bad affects on the health of society. Most of the population is probably unaware of the amount of GMO's that are in food today. If people become more aware of the affects of GMO's, then genetically modified organisms will become less popular because there are many health and moral issues dealing with GMO's. GMO's are not natural and some individuals do not agree with altering DNA unnaturally for ones own benefit. Not only does it affect the targeted organism, it also affects organisms in contact with the GMO's. The biggest health issue is the concern with what is not yet studied. GMO's are relatively new and scientists have not yet determined all the possible affects on ones health. By doing this study, people can be informed of the benefits to GMO's and the bad affects of GMO's. This could cause society to avoid purchasing GMO foods. Social change would occur in good ways and bad ways. There is fear that without GMO's there will be less food for consumption. World hunger is already an issue on its own. Many may disagree with taking more food away, when there is already not enough to feed everyone. On the other hand, without GMO's the risks of unknown health effects in relation to GMO's will be illuminated. This website will be focused on the sociological perspective. The study is regarding society as a whole and society's attitudes about genetically modified organisms by a survey. What does society think about GMO's? How will society change with or without GMO's? These are some of the questions looking to be answered.
